India in a Box: Community Radio
By: Dana Anderson
Several years ago, if a woman in the poor Indian village of Mansoopur wanted to hear her favorite Bollywood song, she simply needed to write down her request and get the message to Raghav Mahato. He would be sure to play the song on his radio station. Raghav FM Mansoopur 1 worked like any other station, broadcasting news and popular music. What made it different was the fact that Mansoopur 1 had been built by a young, illiterate electrician. With a bamboo pole, some wire and a cassette player, Mahato launched the first local FM station in the northern state of Bihar. The transmission equipment cost him about $1. The station gained an audience of hundreds, if not thousands of listeners. It was also illegal.

Hinduism in America
By: Dana Anderson
I first came face-to-face with Hinduism while in Singapore. Wandering through the humidity and crowds in the Little India district, I found myself outside a Hindu temple. A woman sat on the ground beside the temple. Above her rose tiers of deities, all in different colors, all in different poses. I took another look at the woman, wondering about her and about the role of Hinduism in her life.
While several years have passed since that Singapore experience, I continue to be curious about Hinduism. Apparently, so are many other Americans.

Winter Market Unlikely
By: Dana Anderson
Every Wednesday and Saturday in the summer and fall, people craving organic goodies flock to the Boulder Farmers’ Market to buy local produce. The market has been a part of Boulder life since 1986 and was recently named by Livability magazine as one of the top 10 best farmers’ markets in the nation.
With approximately 150 vendors and a central location along Boulder Creek, the market serves as an outlet for local farmers and small businesses to attract customers.
According to the Boulder Economic Council, the market is the largest outdoor market in Colorado. As such, the market has always been held in the warmer months. But at the start of this year’s season, market organizers told the Boulder Daily Camera they were considering extending sales through the winter.
